Boris reflects on the Winterer's dark origins and then realizes it is missing, suspecting the newly arrived and strange instructor. He enlists help from a guard, but the instructor is gone from his room. They investigate his escape route and Boris vows to act decisively if they can't catch him as he reflects on his duty to protect what's entrusted to him.
Boris discovers his important sword, the Winterer, has been stolen and suspects the eccentric new instructor, leading to a frantic search through the night.
