Boris, after introducing himself to Count Bellnore and his daughter Roseness, learns the Count's true intentions: to use Boris as a proxy in a long-forgotten bet. The bet involves a sword fight between children, and Count Bellnore desires Boris to fight on his behalf. The Count reveals his motives and his daughter's potential forced marriage; and presents it as an opportunity for Boris to gain a better life in a new land.
Boris is offered a proposition by Count Bellnore to become his adopted son and fight in a duel, a proposition Boris ultimately accepts to leave his troubled past.
