Synopsis

The chapter opens with the protagonist reflecting on his past trauma and the loss of a friend. He's approached by Tonya, an innkeeper's daughter, who introduces him to Punin, a blacksmith in need of an assistant. Despite his distrust, stemming from past betrayals, the protagonist agrees to try the job, but not without suspicion. He then clashes with some local thugs, further solidifying his cynical outlook, but also reveals he's somewhat more capable than his appearance suggests.
