Synopsis

The Cronos Empire, initially seeking war, is presented with a counter-proposal by Kairo: the release of captured prisoners in exchange for a symbolic punishment of Roman Dmitri, and Fabius is an envoy who makes a deal on Kairo's behalf. Fabius, a recent convert, rationalizes his betrayal, arguing that true loyalty lies with those who show bold sincerity, and his goal is to earn Roman's trust. He also explains his reasoning for siding with someone new, and how it is better than having no loyalty. The chapter ends with Fabius facing the Emperor of Cronos, who expects Roman Dmitri's presence and arm and Fabius has to speak for his country and avoid war.
