Synopsis

The chapter opens on the birthday of a child, identified by a number, at the River of Promise research center. A new director arrives, replacing two previous ones with different reputations, and appears to be well-received initially. He brings toys and food, and the children, while wary, grow fond of him. However, changes occur when the third director dies and the father of a numbered child becomes the fourth director, seemingly bringing a sinister undertone.
