Synopsis

The chapter opens with a terrifying encounter with a wraith, which attacks Yevgen, causing the narrator to run away in fear. The narrator, feeling their own death is near, decides to leave Boris to protect him from their potential madness, similar to the fate that befell Aunt Yeni. Despite Boris’s pleas and offers to stay by his side, the narrator emphasizes Boris must become strong on his own and not rely on others for protection.
